Water Resources Master’s program at IIT Madras

Joint MSc in Water Security & Global Change: A Premier Collaborative Program by IIT Madras and International Institutions without GATE or JAM test
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), in partnership with two esteemed German universities—RWTH Aachen University and Technische Universität Dresden (TUD)—along with the Global Water and Climate Adaptation Centre, launched a cutting edge Joint Master’s Program (JMP) in Water Security and Global Change. This innovative program, supported by academic collaborations with institutions like AIT, Bangkok, and UNU-FLORES, is designed to tackle some of the most pressing challenges in the fields of water security and climate adaptation on a global scale.
The program represents an excellent opportunity for students to engage in interdisciplinary research and gain expertise in managing water resources and climate-related changes. It combines academic rigor, international exposure, and hands-on learning to prepare graduates to confront global environmental challenges. The course will emphasize understanding the complex relationship between water security, climate change, and sustainable development, with an emphasis on practical, real-world solutions.
Structure of the Program
This Joint Master’s Program provides a dynamic learning experience across three renowned institutions, offering students the chance to experience diverse academic environments and research approaches. Students begin their studies at IIT Madras in India for a semester, where they will lay the foundational knowledge and skills needed to address global water security issues. In the subsequent semesters, students will study at RWTH Aachen and TUD in Germany, gaining valuable Global perspectives on water management and climate change adaptation.
The program offers flexibility, allowing students to choose the university where they wish to complete their Master's thesis. This flexibility allows for a tailored academic experience, enabling students to specialize in areas that align with their individual research interests. Furthermore, students will benefit from the unique opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary research projects, drawing from the expertise of professors and researchers at all three participating universities.
Program Objectives
The Joint MSc in Water Security and Global Change aims to equip students with the skills needed to address critical water-related challenges in a rapidly changing world. By integrating perspectives from engineering, environmental science, policy, and climate change adaptation, the program will produce graduates capable of leading initiatives that ensure sustainable water management and resilience to climate impacts.
Students will learn to work across sectors and disciplines, designing solutions that are not only scientifically sound but also socially and economically viable. The program focuses on three key areas:
Water Security: Understanding the challenges of water scarcity, pollution, and governance, and developing strategies for sustainable water use and management.
Climate Change: Assessing the impacts of climate change on water resources and developing adaptive solutions for communities worldwide.
Global Sustainability: Fostering an integrated approach to water management and climate adaptation to ensure sustainable ecosystems and communities.
Eligibility and Financial Support
This program is open to both Indian and international students with a background in engineering, including but not limited to civil, environmental, mechanical, or electrical engineering disciplines. Applicants should demonstrate a strong academic record and a keen interest in water security and climate adaptation challenges. The screening process is based on the candidate's profile, followed by an interview. There is NO entrance test required (such as GATE, JAM, or JEE).
In terms of financial support, students will receive a stipend to assist with living costs. While studying at IIT Madras, students will receive approximately 450 Euros per month. When studying in Germany, this amount increases to approximately 950 Euros per month, reflecting the cost of living in different countries.
